Yesterday the RSPB announced a new record for the oldest Oystercatcher in the UK. You can help these amazing birds reach old age by giving them space to feed, rest and nest - especially by avoiding shingle spots and islands during these spring and summer months as they attempt to raise young.

Nature recovery in ACTION! We’re eagerly awaiting the return of the terns - and we’re very nearly ready for them!

Thanks to the volunteers from the @thefriendsofchichesterharbour for their hard work and help in getting the rafts ready!

It's International Dark Sky Week - and the Chichester Harbour National Landscape is a great place to discover the night sky, with three Dark Skies Discovery Sites. The most accessible of these is at West Itchenor, at the bottom of the footpath from the carpark.

Recently, our visiting children have learnt about coastal management within Chichester Harbour, and the muddy shore and sand dune habitats. We look forward to welcoming many students in the coming months to learn about the harbour and prepare for their GCSEs or A Levels.

🌍World CURLEW Day🌍

We're lucky here in Chichester Harbour - the sights and sounds of the Curlew are not unusual - particularly with over-wintering birds. But Curlews are in drastic decline across the UK; their population has dropped by more than 50% since 1995. Much of the reason for this can be attributed to loss of undisturbed breeding habitat (farmland and uplands) as well as an increase in predators like foxes.

🍎🍎Oak Galls🍎🍎 Also known as Oak Apple

🍎🍎Oak Galls🍎🍎

Also known as Oak Apples, these galls are growths on oak trees caused by the oak apple gall wasp. These tiny wasps lay their eggs into the buds (or acorns or roots) of an oak tree. As the larvae hatch they secrete a chemical which interferes with the normal cell growth causing these apple-like growths. The larvae feed within the oak gall, emerging in June and July as adult wasps.

Whilst the oak gall is up to 5cm in diameter, the wasps themselves are tiny - only up to 3.5mm long!
