Chichester Harbour is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is managed by Chichester Harbour Conservancy. We are the only Statutory Harbour Authority with responsibility for managing an AONB.

We aim to conserve and enhance this beautiful environment and work closely with a wide range of stakeholders, from landowners and local businesses to Local Authorities.

Our Rangers look after conservation in the Harbour and are always out and about. They organise weekly work parties with the Friends of Chichester Harbour and manage several sites on behalf of Chichester Harbour Trust.

Our Ecologist can provide advice on how to manage land to benefit wildlife. Our annual tree and hedgerow planting scheme helps to create new areas of woodland and hedgerow. Some areas of the Harbour meet the criteria for Dark Skies and we are hoping these areas will become designated to preserve them for the future.

Although Chichester Harbour is not a bathing water area, sample results are compared to standards in the Bathing Water Directive. Water quality is monitored regularly and is generally very good.
