Chichester Harbour has a new weather station. Emsmet, has been installed on the Southerly Cardinal Marker at the Southern end of the Emsworth channel.
The new Emsmet station is now active and joins Chimet and Cambermet in providing important weather services for water users in Chichester Harbour.
You can now access weather reports from Emsmet, Chimet and Cambermet stations at www.chimet.co.uk
Localised weather conditions vary throughout the Harbour. Data from the new station will be very helpful to all harbour users and maintain safety in the busy harbour area around Emsworth.
Local Organisations join together
Emsworth Sailing Club initiated the project, suggesting a new weather station would benefit local water users. The club ran a feasibility project to determine the equipment and budget required and proposed a suitable site. The project was funded with generous support from local organisations including: Emsworth Sailing Club, Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club, Langstone Sailing Club, Emsworth Yacht Harbour, Chichester Harbour Federation and The Friends of Chichester Harbour.
A team from Chichester Harbour Conservancy installed the Emsmet and will also maintain the station. The service is operated by SSG (Solent Support Group) a charity that operate the full Solent suite of weather stations including our local sites of Chimet and Cambermet.
Harbour Master Jo Cox said, ‘the new Emsmet weather station provides a valuable additional service for Chichester Harbour. We are grateful to the support from local organisations for championing and funding this project . Accurate local weather services are important in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all water users.”
