Ensuring access for all in Chichester Harbour is important, but, as with any natural environment, there are some challenges. The environment in constantly changing and from a conservation and protection objective it’s vital to ensure the harbour remains in its most natural form possible. However, this can make access harder, even for the youngest and most able bodied.
For those who are less able, have limited mobility and the elderly, Chichester Harbour must remain a fully inclusive destination. So as well as ensuring that there are flat wide paths which can be navigated in wheelchairs, scooters and buggies, the aim is to make certain that the water, a major part of Chichester Harbour, is also accessible.
Nationally Recognised Accessibility Schemes
As well as undertaking many of our own initiatives, we work with and subscribe to national and regional schemes that provide valuable guidance, crucial funding and equipment so that visitors can enjoy the Harbour and all it has to offer. Schemes including Get Afloat, Wheelyboats and The Compass Card enable free access and guidance on how to get the most out of attractions. These schemes also support dedicated groups to deliver accessible activities in and around the Harbour. The Harbour is home to several inclusive sailing groups and our eco-friendly boat Solar Heritage, is modified to help wheelchair users aboard with a lift.
Accessible Facilities
There are a number of inclusive facilities around Chichester Harbour with accessible toilets at Emsworth, Itchenor and Cobnor. A range of easier access routes and accessible walks are available around the harbour too. We’re also improving other forms of access, working with local dementia support charities to bring more people into the Harbour and ensuring future developments are delivered with the enjoyment of everybody in mind.
